SiteBoss 550 Delivers SNMPv3 Data Protection Capability

In the online world of business, data is the lifeblood of companies, and nothing is more important than secure, reliable communication. Unfortunately, too many organizations fail to properly secure their data, leaving themselves vulnerable to hackers and criminals.

SEATTLE – July 8, 2009 – Asentria, a leading provider of remote site monitoring and telemanagement products today announced that they have reached an important new level of data security for their SiteBoss 550 units. SNMPv3, a requirement in the most security conscious networks, now comes standard with the SiteBoss 550 units.

Background
Since its first publication in 1988, the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) has become the most widely-used network-management tool for TCP/IP-based networks. SNMP defines a protocol for the exchange of management information, but does much more than that. It also defines a format for representing management information and a framework for organizing distributing systems into managing systems and managed agents.

To remedy the lack of security in SNMP versions 1&2, a number of independent groups began work on a security enhancement to SNMPv2. By January of 1998, the IETF SNMPv3 working group had produced a set of Proposed Internet standards published as RFCs 2271 and 2275, eventually adopted officially as SNMPv3.

SiteBoss 550 – SNMPv3 Data and Network Security

Encryption ensures that the data sent from the Asentria unit to the manager is unreadable by anyone eavesdropping on the network. The SiteBoss 550 can provide either DES or AES encryption types.

Authentication enables a management station to interact with the S550 only if the S550 speciffically allows it by using a user-based security model. In the event of an attack on your critical infrastructure, the MD5 or SHA-1 authentication protocols built into SNMPv3 protect the S550 and management station from unauthorized SNMP activity.

The SiteBoss 550 also supports SNMPv3 Sets, Gets and Trap Notifications. Contact Sales for more information.
