Hardware Engineering Manager



Asentria produces hardware systems including embedded Linux platforms, smaller MCU platforms, and various sensors and peripheral products, all focused on remote equipment monitoring and control solutions. We focus on domestic and international opportunities typically related to wireless broadband and cellular site management. Our hardware development process is extremely rapid and involves multiple projects occurring simultaneously, all with urgency. Typically a customer or an opportunity is hanging in the balance while we get new hardware developed. The Engineering Hardware Manager works with the Director of Engineering, a senior engineer, and an engineering team of 4-5 subordinates to accomplish the goals development of hardware engineering projects. This position is typically highly busy and multi-tasked.

 

The ideal person for this position will have experience producing hardware designs in a very fast paced production development organzation with multiple irons in the fire all the time. The ideal person for this position knows how to and is used to getting things done rapidly. Their previous work would show a voluminous output of hardware projects over time. This person will also be able to be an organizing and satbilizing influence on this demanding production process.

Thus, for the position of Hardware Engineering Manager, the employee must:

  • Get a high volume of quality hardware projects rapidly completed on a continual basis;
  • Manage a team of hardware development engineers to get this done;
  • Ensure the project load of hardware engineers is reasonably distributed;
  • Ensure hardware engineers get their work done rapidly, directly, with proper priority, and get debugged when they are bugged;
  • Ensure that our hardware dev process works fast and efficient to support the rapid design model on which we base our company;
  • Manage all our ongoing hardware projects in coordination with authorized plans and the Dir Engineering;
  • Ensure that consultation with Mfg Services (materials procurement/purchasing) occurs very early in product designs and is tightly coordinated from start to finish;
  • Review and optimization of designs during this process and afterwards for DFM and cost improvements;
  • Direct, and when necessary personally manage, hardware certifications;
  • Share responsibility for hardware specification documents;
  • Represent Engineering for hardware-related technology transfer to Contract Manufacturing (CM);
  • Coordinate schedules and be responsible for high quality platform products and peripherals;
  • Build trust and confidence as a manager of the engineering team;
  • Demonstrate the skills of excellent communication, team player, mentor and listener;
  • Ensure that designs are verified, tested and completed on schedule;
  • Facilitate a smooth transfer of designs to Asentria and Contract Manufacturing;
  • Provide trouble shooting and take corrective action on defects;

  • Substantial experience in producing products in a fast paced, customer and opportunity driven environment;

  • Strong documentation and analysis skills and the ability to lead interdepartmental meetings as needed;
  • Ability to tie up numerous loose ends to ensure a product can be efficiently manufactured;
  • A willingness to do any of the tasks associated with hardware development, documentation, calibration and/or test;

  • A fast paced development culture is enhanced while improving aspects of process and documentation;
  • Project specifications requirements are written early on and are kept current if changes are made;
  • Hardware development is managed efficiently within Microsoft Project;
  • High-quality hardware platforms and projects are delivered expediently and efficiently which result in high levels of customer satisfaction;
  • Technical data, details and documentation are provided so products can be accurately and rapidly manufactured and marketed;
  • Hardware and peripheral needs (such as test fixtures) are provided to the Software development team for successful development;
  • Engineering and senior management is kept apprised of new projects schedules and unforeseen interdepartmental deliverables;
  • Bills of Materials and hardware designs are correct with respect to the customer requirements;
  • Engineering is represented by leading Production Support Meetings;
  • Manufacturing is supported in general by their actions;
  • Legacy products support and new product development are effectively managed;
  • EMI (e.g. FCC, CISPR, EN55022, EN55024), Safety (IEC60950), RoHS and other certifications are in compliance (or is brought into compliance) as deemed necessary by Product Management for the target markets for such hardware.
